Robert A.F. Thurman

REFUGE (2006)Featuring His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Martin Scorsese, Melissa Mathison, Oliver Stone, Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo, Bernando Bertolucci, Philip Glass, Dzongzar Khyentse Rinpoche, Ani Loraine O'Rourke, along with and other established spiritual and cultural leaders, transports the audience into the world of spiritual and cultural transformation, the themes of self-discovery, meditation and social engagement.REFUGE BackgroundThe 60 minute film REFUGE originally began with the vision of Hollywood’s interest in Tibet, the Dalai Lama, and Buddhism. While in a fundraising process the 9/11 tragedy occurred in Manhattan, New York. The producer writer and myself decided to change the direction of the film in respect of humanity’s thirst for spiritual nourishment in a time of global trauma and loss. The new film, REFUGE, embraces the solace and welcoming of Buddhism in the west and the spiritual pursuit of westerners approaching Buddhism, a refuge and pilgrimage both east and west. The filming of REFUGE began in 1989 when my own Lama was enshrined in a stupa in Kathmandu Nepal. A next filming stage occurred in 1997, while I was commissioned by Swiss television to make a short movie on the subject. Continuous filming occurred until 2002, by which time the concept of REFUGE was clear to we filmmakers.REFUGE takes a courageous approach in challenging its protagonists with very direct questions concerning, for example: sexual and financial exploitation by spiritual authorities, “guru” worship, the concepts of ego, identity, interconnectivity and social engagement. While some goals were accomplished in this film, there’s still much more to develop in this ongoing story of refuge east and west. The shooting began 26 years ago with a tour of the Dalai Lama through America, and the funeral ceremonies of H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche, a Buddhist master, in Nepal. It continuedin Tibet, U.S., India, Nepal, Canada and Europe, through 2002.At the end of this event we will be holding a public Q&A with Robert Thurman and John Halpern. We hope that you join us!Click here to watch the "Refuge (2006)" Film Trailer
