Born in Kyushu, Japan, Mari Tanaka was raised in Shinto and Japanese Zen philosophy. After a near-death experience, Mari explored ancient techniques for her own self-healing and began studies of energy work in earnest. She is a lifelong practitioner of meditation, fascinated by the nexus of mind, body and spirit.
Mari also explores the potential of sound to effect consciousness, utilizing the Indian classical drone instruments, the tanpura and shrutibox, to create sonic spaces for meditation and journeying. From Lincoln Center to Carnegie Hall, Mari has collaborated in a wide range of musical projects with notable musicians like NEA Jazz Master Reggie Workman, Brandee Younger, Amir El Saffar, and Eric Whitacre
“Homerun. One of the best retreats I’ve ever attended. Was an incredible treat especially to have so much access to Krishna Das, and I will never forget the Robert Thurman’s hysterical and insightful words. Incredibly inspiring and powerful weekend!”
